Pharyngitis - Please Please Please help!

Post a new topicby shorty on Sat Apr 12, 2008 6:00 am

Hi All,

This is my first post, so I will try not to ramble too much!

I have been suffereing for the last week with a nasty sore throat I have been off work all this week and been to the doctors 3 times to try and get some advice and guidance.
The first 2 times they just told me it was a sore throat and that it was Viral so they would not give me any antibiotics.

I ended up in so much pain on Thursday Morning that at 430am when I woke up I could not swallow at all and it felt like I had swallowed glass, I ended up calling the out of hours service and they named it Pharyngitis

I went to the Doctors again on the Thursday, planning to go back to work on Friday, to speak to him about this as I have never heard of it. I had my Tonsillis out as a Kid, so I have not suffered with a nasty sore throat like this in a while. He described it that if I did have Tonsillis then I would have Tonsillitus, and that I was contagious so not to go back to work, which just hacked me off as I have been throughly bored since Wednesday.

Anyway, my throat is still sore, and I am self medicating, which is helping a little. My concern is, do I go back to work monday if my throat is still sore? I have to talk a lot for my job, so I am concerned that this will affect it. If I don't go into work I will have to get a certificate, which is fine but I am worried how it is going to look to the people who I work with.

Please Please Please help and advise!

Thanks
Amy

Pharyngitis, laryngitis, tonsilitis, etc.... You have a sore throat and they are caused by a number of different organisms. They will vary in severity and length of time. They can even become chronic. But yours is still within what would be considered a typical time frame although it does sound severe. If you have seen several doctors I'm sure they have ruled out strep and other more serious pathogens. You may indeed experience some difficulty at work while you recuperate. Do what your doctors recommended and give it time. You should start feeling better shortly. I personally experienced a case of laryngitis that took away my voice for 2 entire weeks. Getting sick sucks but it happens.
